In Their Words

Research Program

1 / Identifying environmental risk factors for health by using geospatial science to conduct epidemiologic studies in large-scale populations

Research grants

  • Study on air pollution exposure and liver disease and cancer risk using electronic health records (EHRs) (K01 DK125612 grant funded by NIH/NIDDK)

  • Study on air pollution adductomic biomarkers and liver cancer risk in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) cohort (Ancillary Study AS697) (funded by Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium)

Publications

  • Study on air pollution exposure and liver cancer risk using US cancer registry data (published in Cancer Causes Control)

  • Commentary on the state of the science on air pollution exposure and liver cancer risk (published in Environ Adv)

  • Study on air pollution exposure and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (now known as metabolic-dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease, MASLD) using a US hospitalizations database (published in Environ Res)

2 / Spatiotemporal exposure modeling of environmental factors using state-of-the-art geospatial science methods, including geographic information systems (GIS), geostatistical kriging, and remote sensing technologies

Research grants

  • Development of a high spatiotemporal resolution light exposure model for solar jetlag and environmental circadian misalignment: fredhutch.org/lightmodel + VoPham et al. Environ Epidemiol (2024)

    • Funded by University of Washington-NIEHS Interdisciplinary Center for Exposures, Diseases, Genomics and Environment (EDGE) (P30 ES007033)

Publications

  • Methodology paper on our US nationwide spatiotemporal exposure model for ultraviolet (UV) radiation (published in Environ Health)

  • This UV exposure model has been linked with large-scale prospective cohorts to conduct epidemiologic studies such as in the Nurses' Health Study II (NHSII) and the Sister Study

3 / Translational research for population health impact: We are committed to empowering people with information to understand and/or modify their personal exposures to environmental factors that have been shown to impact health – an important consideration in light of climate change. We are a proud and active partner of the AccuWeather Climate Impact Program.

Research grants

  • Educational intervention study on promoting air pollution knowledge (e.g., Air Quality Index [AQI]) using Plume Labs wearable air pollution sensors funded by Prevent Cancer Foundation (abstract at 2022 International Society for Environmental Epidemiology Conference)

Geospatial Exposure
Models

The following geospatial environmental exposure models have been developed by our lab and collaborators. These models are available for linkage with study populations (using locational information such as geocoded residential addresses) to conduct exposure assessments for epidemiologic studies. Contact us for more info.
